SERPENT AT THE VERNISSAGE
A downloadable game for Windows
SERPENT AT THE VERNISSAGE is an open world, first-person adventure game.

"It was supposed to be simple: Infiltrate a private island paradise, steal a priceless piece of art, and get out alive. Now look at you: Lost inside a dream, inside a dream, inside a dream. How did you get here? Who built this place? And how do you escape?"

- Complex puzzles meet first-person platforming and the occasional shootout (pew pew!)
- Open-ended gameplay; tackle the challenges in any order you want
- Cruise around on yachts or pack your diving goggles
- Explore the secrets beneath the isles
The game is made in GODOT, BLENDER and ABLETON LIVE.
Hope you enjoy it and all the best,
Daniel :)

Such a great experience. I think Deleuze would enjoy it, too.
Thanks so much! Means a lot :)
If the reason that this is hosted on Google Drive is the file size limit, you have some options for hosting it directly on Itch!
The best option is to upload it with "Butler," Itch's interface for uploading games and generating patch files that the Itch desktop client can use. The Itch Desktop App now includes a graphical version of Butler as well (standalone Butler is run in the command line), which was just added: https://itch.io/updates/pushing-builds-with-butler-is-now-in-the-itch-app
Butler has a 2GB limit on filesize by default, which can be increased on request by emailing support@itch.io. (but it looks like 2gb would be fine in this instance!)
If you really want to use the web uploader though, Itch can increase the limit for that up to 2GB (max, that's as far as it can go) by emailing support@itch.io.
Thanks so much for the info! I've not heard of the Butler-interface yet. And yes- you're exactly right: the file size-limit is the issue. It currently sits at 2.5GB, but it's terribly optimized (redundant textures, sounds etc.). I will go over it in the coming weeks, squeeze it down and then go with the Butler-interface. Again: Thanks so much! :)
From a quick test, it looks like the current build would actually work (though of course, I'd never say no to a more efficient install size haha), Itch is counting the filesize of it as 1.7 GiB compressed -> 1.8 GiB for the patch file Butler generates, which is under the default 2GB limit.
Haha gotcha! :D
And thanks again for the heads-up regarding Butler - much appreciated! Will look into asap.
This was a super impressive experience, easily the best find in the "Game industry hardship fund" bundle. Or just generally the best "I know nothing about this game" find I've made in a while!
Both the audiovisual style and the open-ended game design made me think of Paradise Killer, another game I adore. A bit of The Witness maybe there too, due to the same "find your own way" approach.
There was no annoying handholding but enough clues to help me progress and feel like I was uncovering everything myself. The world is stunning, surprising and a joy to explore. The music is brilliant and the story more interesting than I expected as well.
In terms of scale and polish Serpent at the Vernissage is more modest when compared to those other two games I mentioned. Compact world and game length (maybe around 5 hours) are only positives in my books though, the game never got a chance to become boring. There are some collision detection bugs and vehicle controls are quite bad but overall the game is still hugely impressive!
Massive thanks for the game, Daniel! Really looking forward to whatever you create next. :)
Vilhart, my friend- thank you so much! Truly appreciate the kind words. Means a lot! :)
And haha- yeah, you're totally right regarding the vehicle controls. It was such a pain figuring out how to get the speedboat feeling SOMEWHAT right, that when it came to the snowmobile I was like "okay, this has to be good enough now; on to the next task" :D
And for whatever comes next: I do indeed have another thing in the works which will debut at this year's PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct in September. But I'll post the trailer on the socials soon after.
Again: Thank you so much for taking the time of playing Serpent and the kind words! :)
I'm super impressed with the first hour. Feels like the first time I played Gravity Bone or Thirty Flights of Loving again.
The only things I've brushed up against are performance hitches, no mouse sensitivity control, and the early advice about taking notes and using multi-jump should perhaps also mention "save manually!" (I did not know you can save whenever so I died twice and had the game crash once, so each time I had to restart from the beginning before I realized saves are manual.)
Otherwise, man I am digging this game.
thanks so much, my friend! truly means a lot! :)
and yeah, you're totally right: it's still rough around the edges. I hope come Winter I'll have another week or two to fix some stuff and add some QOL-features (just like mouse sensitivity slider).
again: thanks so much for playing and the kind words!
daniel
I tried playing the game and really need a sense of direction.
I get that it’s supposed to be figured out on your own, but for at least the first part help guide the player.
I followed the note and went to the location, all doors were locked.
I have no idea how I can possibly progress in this game.
Hi SuperDev - thanks for your message! Yeah, it can be a little bit byzantian in the beginning. Another player made a handy guide over on Steam:

Hope it helps!
All the best and have a smashing summer,
Daniel
Hey Daniel - Thanks for getting back to me.
Just finished the trip, was really fun! Love the art style, soundtrack works really well in each environment. The story had an interesting hook to it, wouldn’t mind a sequel!
As for nitpicks, the story piece at the end not being present in the next area was about it. To me, it ruined the continuity between each environment.
Found a softlock that hindered a bit of progress (not a softlock really as you can just reload game, but it was annoying having to spend a few minutes getting back there haha) by going out of bounds unintentionally, turns out all the water was very much fake… Walked for 30 minutes or so ( was probably that long as it extended out super far ) and surprisingly game did not crash when I jumped off the edge, camera went really crazy though!
Have a splendid summer too,
Nova
Thanks for the kind words, Nova! Much appreciated! :)
And thanks for the feedback! Will try to get everything more polished in the next project.
Hey dev, just a note, since the game is in the bundle now
The Itch app won't allow downloads from Google Drive, so it's impossible to download through the app currently. You have to go to the site, bring up the bundle from your accoutn in a browser, and download from there
Ah - thanks for the heads up! Didn't know as I don't really use the app. Will look into it! Thx again! :)
